With their second CD out titled, “Ponygirl,” German/American band Big Boy is ready to take on the road once again. The critics might hate this band, but the fans love them. And after all when was the last time a critic actually bought a CD? So throw your middle finger up to the critics and take a look into their latest record.

By Catee Delaloye

First congrats on releasing your new album!

Big Boy: Thank you very much :-)

Could you pick a track out of Ponygirl and tell me a little about it?

Big Boy-Well, I think- differently from the first album- we didn´t try to write this one song and then build everything around it but make an album that you can listen to from beginning to the end. We rather focussed on finding and defining a sound and writing more clever lyrics this time I´d say. I don´t say clever- I say more clever… hah hah hah

Why did you name your new album “Ponygirl.”?

Big Boy-I liked the kinkiness. I got into BDSM in the past few years and I felt a big boy and ponygirl is a decent match.

Theirs a picture of you riding a plastic horse, I must say it screams out, “look at me!”

What is the idea behind this photograph?

Big Boy-Well it kinda looks like an equestrian statue. You know, those monuments with some old general or something on a horse. I thought it was funny. Also I feel it´s definitely time to build one of those for us..

What do you think is the biggest change between your last release and your newest?

We arrived in reality. With the first album we created a fairytale reality and we believed that you can become anything you want to be. Which is true. But the environment around you doesn´t change and you become a foreign body in a world you don´t understand anymore. We didn´t try to fake anything this time. This album is how we feel at the moment and I don´t expect anybody to understand us. And hardly anybody does to be honest.

How have the critics been to Ponygirl so far?

Most critics hate it. But we hate most critics too.

What has changed the most since the formation of Big Boy?

Big Boy-We usually drink for free and that´s not a good thing. It´s hard to impossible to live in other structures than the music scene once you seriously start a band but you realize that the music scene is not much better than a mediocre surrounding and lifestyle. So you are trapped just as much.

What do you think is the biggest difference between the U.S music scene and the European?

BIG BOY-I think people in the US are less jealous but L.A. is a crazy place and there´s no real scene either. Everybody tries to make it but people keep telling us that the real scene is everywhere but in L.A. There´s good and bad people wherever you go, it has nothing to do with nationality but I have more friends in L.A.

They are all neurotic and crazy though.

Has your move to the U.S changed your musical influences in any way?

BIG BOY-Not really. I still listen to the same kind of stuff. Although I heard a lot of Gangster Rap recently because I used to live with a black girl. I do get inspired by Los Angeles a lot though. It´s a magical place and if we do a third album it will be our best.

Lastly, you have some tour dates lined up in Germany, can the rest of the world expect to see you anytime soon?

BIG BOY-I really hope so…

Thank you!

BIG BOY-Thank you too!!
